It is infinitely nicer to come home from Africa than to come home from college. I absolutely dreaded conversations that inevitably included, "So, do you have a boyfriend? *nudge nudge wink wink*" and would likely lead to "Why not?" when I said no. What obnoxious questions.
While talking with Holly one day after getting lost around Mame Codou's house, I decided that if someone ever asked me "why not?" again, I would ask "Why should I?" Gutted! But unfortunately, no one has given me the opportunity to be snarky. And I wanted to, on behalf of all us poor single people who feel looked down upon by people's condescending and inadvertently (I hope inadvertently) insulting questions.
And anyway, all this is actually because I was watching through some of my favorite vlogger's vlogs, and I restumbled across his awesome song.
Oh, charlieissocoollike, I love you and your songs about love. Way to be awesome and express the feelings I have when I am sane and not overcome by societal expectations.
This is a song about love, and not a very good one
I don’t know enough to tell you about heartbreak
But I know it’s there, and you can avoid it
By listening to your head
Which is just what I’ve done, and it isn’t perfect
But look what I’ve done instead, instead of falling for you
I’ve never really been in love and that is fine by me
I’ll sit at home and refine the person I want to be
‘Cause I’m still young and not yet prepared to waste my time
On chasing girls who are yet to fully form their minds
And I know that there’s a woman waiting, but she’s not a woman yet
So I’ll wait, and make sure I don’t do something I’ll regret
I always have these really snarky retorts for people who ask questions that are barely their business and not helpful. Is it anyone's business if you have a boyfriend? If you are sad that you don't have a boyfriend, is them asking about it helping? NO! However, like you, since I came up with a plan, no one has asked those probing questions. :) But, I'd probably just answer nicely anyway. I'll have to tell you sometime about my brother-in-law!
